Reflection Prompt: Reflect on how you perceive yourself as an online learner? Are you well-prepare to be an online leaner? Tell us about what you need to improve in order to be a successful online learner.
Description
As I read the articles, The asynchronous setting of meeting anytime anywhere seems the biggest reason for online learning. With that comes challenges of being self-disciplines and organized. If you procrastinate then you will have trouble finishing or doing your best work. Communication becomes impersonal even with constant feedback and working with others. The time laspse can add to confusion and frustration even when it comes regularly it's still seems disjointed. You need patience and to read between others comments at times which may interupt the flow of your conversation. These are some of the things I had to look at when I first considered an online program between eight academic institutions. One needs the confidence in ones-self that you can work independently and then with others in a virtual setting. The articles and chapters clearly stated my concerns and my strengths as well.
Impact
When starting an on-line course it helped to get the syllabus and look at my own time restraints. It helps to meet with the instructor at least once to put a voice to a name and hear how they see the course progressing. This helped me wrap my head around the duration of the course and picture what I needed to do for my own santitiy and success. I marked pages aand downloaded documents because I knew that there would be times that I wouldn't be near a computer but I would have time to work on lessons. I like to read through everything and then go back and see what the focus of the lesson will be so that I have some background information. I also set up a place where I sit at home and put a computer there and the materials in a bin. When i sit down, I have the materials to start working. This all set me up for success so thati can read and understand what I am to do. I know that I can also get feed back from discussions, even though I have to wait. If I am working and checking back ,then I feel more grounded in the class.
Intent
As I realize what I needed to be successful, I decided that I will set up learning experiences for teachers and students along the same line. They have to bring their style of learning with them, but I can provide a format for success. I can let them know what we will be learning through a syllabus and calendar. Material should be easily accessible so that the focus will be on learning. Communication through at least one face-to-face and then the internet will be a way to stay connected and to help with pacing. I intend to continue with on-line learning for myself and to provide the option to others.
